What is the right Digital Camera Memory Card Storage Size for you?

When you buy a digital camera, you will discover, probably very quickly, that the amount of memory available on the digital memory card that came with the camera is not enough. Taking pictures at highest quality will fill up your standard 8-16 MB (megabytes) camera memory card much too quickly. Although downloading digital photos can be quick, it's not always convenient, particularly if you're not close to your computer.

You could just delete the digital photos, but that defeats the benefit of having a digital camera, where you can take several pictures of the same scene, to get just the right picture, and you don’t want to be picking and choosing which photos to keep just by viewing them on the digital camera’s LCD screen. Instead, why not invest in one or more additional digital camera memory cards that you can have available to change frequently.

Choosing the Right Capacity

Here are some solutions for selecting the right camera memory card size:

  1. Larger capacity digital camera memory card: the advantage of choosing a memory card in the range of 1 GB (1000MB) and up will certainly help you shoot longer without having to download your pictures to a computer frequently. You could take two or three hundred photos, or more, before filling up the memory card. While this may seem like a great thing at first, digital  camera memory cards can occasionally fail, be erased accidentally, or get lost, and that’s a lot of memories gone. The other disadvantage is that larger memory cards consume more battery power than smaller capacity memory cards.

  2. Buy two or more medium capacity digital camera memory cards. Memory cards with 256 MB up to 4 GB will give you plenty of space to take digital pictures, yet ensure that you don’t have all of your digital photos in just one place. Carry more than one memory card for maximum image security and peace of mind. This way you can change out cards and label them before downloading onto the computer.  Also, if a memory card should become corrupted, you won’t lose all your digital images.
