Use your computer to create a mosaic picture, using your favorite digital photos

A photo mosaic, or photo montage, is new and fun visual way of displaying your digital photos. The photo mosaic is one large image made out of hundreds and thousands of tiny images. Your small digital images are arranged into patterns, like original mosaics made from colored stones, but each tile - more commonly called a cell -- is an actual photo.

When photo mosaics are created, each digital photo is analyzed for several factors, including color, and is optimally placed in patterns to create the main photo mosaic image.

Create a photo montage postcard or poster

Now you can create these photo mosaic masterpieces right from your own computer, using photo mosaic software specially designed to do the digital photo sorting and assembling. You'll be able to turn family photos into a nice photo montage postcard or poster with very little effort.

Before you start your first photo mosaic project, you should have at least 100 or so digital photos somewhere on your hard drive, or on a CD-ROM, ready to use. These are the digital images you will use to build the photo mosaic. You may need more or less than 100 images for your mosaic, but after you build one you will be able to add or remove digital pictures to get the best results.

A couple of photo mosaic software programs to get you started are: PhotoMosaic, and Serif MontagePlus.

Read more about software options in the article "What to look for in photo mosaic software".
